The artist and cartoonist Ulf Lundkvist lives in the small community of Krokek at Kolmården in Sweden. Here he creates his art and subtle cartoons in his own pace. Most people associates him with Assar, his most famous cartoon figure, but the number of cartoon figures that has passed between his finger are innumerable.
The art of Ulf Lundkvist is admittedly related to his cartoons, but when the balloon is gone a very different side of his creativity is made visible. A more meditative vein is exposed, often a calm consideration of something plain and common that suddenly is given a magic shimmer. What hits the viewer is the magic lighting, the abrupt portraits and of cource, all the dogs. - We all have our own ways of making doodles, dogs have become mine, says Ulf. It is also a way to get started with the creative process, a way to defuse the process. There are many sweet expressions in all these dog portraits and they truly appeal to the audiences sympathy. Especially the in the picture of the dog mourning his master at the grave. - Pictures always tell a story, they are both a cliché an my own interpretation of the process of life. It is a kind of fable, an old tradition that I follow in my own way. Often it can be very difficult to express unhappy human beings, then this can be an opening. Everybody interprets the world in their own way. Perhaps the origin of this fascination for dog portraits is an old dog sculpture Ulf did when he was nine years old and that still is with him. - It stands on my drawing board, Ulf says and laughs. Ulf has had more contact with the world of journalists then with the world of artists. - It has probably characterized my artistic expression. Perhaps it has to do with their approach to dead lines. You just have to be finished at a certain time. At the same time you don.t have to take the creative process as something super serious and pompous. I think it has increased my playfulness and your also part of a team and not so unique. Are there any challenges left for this multi artist? - I am trying to learn how to draw, he says with a gleam in his eyes. I try to learn something all the time.
