Harriet Holmström-Sand was born in Österbotten on the West Coast of Finland 1965. Brush and pen have always come natural to her.

– I have always lived in these parts of the country. Although my mother persistently claims that I was born with a pen in my hand, I don’t take too literally, but it is almost true.
Before she could read and write she drew long picture sequences with stories. Later on she also added the written words to picture series.
– 1984-86 I went to one of our local art schools, that just had started. It was called The Swedish Art School in Nykarleby, today it is incorporated in The Institute of Professions.
There she was mostly interested in photo and graphics. The years that followed she was a busy exhibitor, exhibiting photo, graphics and also paintings.
– There was nothing wrong with the quantity of my output, but perhaps my work at that time wasn’t fully developed, she remembers.
Then she took long break that lasted until 2001 when she discovered the sheer joy of sculpturing.
– Since then I have had a about ten exhibitions, mostly here in where I live, but also in the southern parts of Finland. I rather not exhibit in galleries, but in places where people move about, libraries, hospitals and so forth. Now I let GAS do exhibition to give me some more time to write. When I was a child I was pretty sure about what I wanted to do with my life; I wanted lots of kids, lots of animals and I wanted to be an artist and a writer. I don’t think there will be any more children than the two I have, I have plenty of animals, perhaps I am an artist, but I need to get back to my writing.
To combine words and pictures and eventually publish books is something that interests Harriet Holmström-Sand right now, or to combine words and sculptures into sculptural books. But for now, enjoy her sculptures here at GAS!
